The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) introduced the Non-Muslim Wills Registration Office in 2018, which has since become popular among non-Muslims who own assets in the UAE. This service allows individuals to control the succession of their assets through a valid Will.
In addition to asset distribution, a Will registered through the ADJD can include provisions for the care of minor children. This allows individuals to appoint both temporary and permanent guardians to take responsibility if necessary.
ADJD’s Transition to Online Will Registration
Covid-19 and the Move to Online Services
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the ADJD has transitioned its Will registration services online, eliminating the need for individuals to appear in person at the Court for registration. Once the Will is registered remotely, the ADJD used to courier the original Will to the client at a UAE-registered address.
New Electronic Will Format and Features
Starting last month, clients who register Wills through the ADJD no longer need to wait for physical delivery. Now, the document is uploaded to the ADJD portal, and an electronic Will is available for download. This electronic Will includes:
- Digital signature certificate
- Official stamp of the ADJD
- Barcode and unique reference number for verification, ensuring confidentiality and authenticity.
The electronic Will now replaces the physical Will and is recognized as the original by the ADJD.
Benefits of the Online Registration Process
Efficiency and Accessibility of the Online System
In our opinion, this innovative move by the ADJD significantly enhances the Non-Muslim Wills Registration Service, streamlining the entire process. Clients now have direct access to their registered Wills via the online portal.
Affordable Registration Fees
With the nominal ADJD registration fee (AED 950 per Will), setting up a UAE Will has become accessible and affordable for all who want to secure their affairs for their loved ones.
Accessibility for Non-Residents
As the service is now fully virtual, individuals residing outside the UAE can also register through the ADJD Non-Muslim Wills Registration Service if they own assets in the UAE, regardless of their location.
