Is January really the “Divorce Month” ? Think again

For some, while the new year brings in resolutions including diets, “dry” January, and personal goals, they can also include consideration of divorce.  Lawyers have often referred to January as the Divorce Month, following a usual trend of post-holiday divorce enquiries during January.

Although each case has its individual reasons, common reasons for considering filing for divorce after the festive period include:

  • A breakdown in communication causing misunderstandings, unresolved conflicts, and emotional distance.
  • Infidelity/extramarital affairs which often lead to anger, resentment, and the inability to rebuild trust.
  • Persistent arguments that are not resolved constructively lead to emotional exhaustion.
  • Financial problems which create significant tensions.
  • Substance abuse or other addiction which often cause unpredictability and neglecting of responsibilities as well as financial strain and broken trust.
  • Domestic violence / abuse is a serious issue that is a common reason for one to seek divorce.
  • Partners may grow apart or discover that they are incompatible due to different interests, values, or life goals which can make them feel more like strangers than a couple.
  • Lack of intimacy may spike loneliness or a sense of rejection.
  • Getting married too young may mean that there could be a lack of understanding of emotional obligations and challenges that come with the title of marriage.
  • A lack of commitment or a general disinterest in the partner’s or children’s well-being.
