As we step into 2026, the UK’s immigration system is set to undergo significant changes, reshaping the way travellers enter the Country. With new rules and procedures coming into effect, staying informed has never been more important.
One such requirement being the mandatory need for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visitors from the 85 visa-free Countries. This article breaks down the key details of the UK ETA 2026 rule and answers some of the most common travel questions for UAE residents. Whether you are a UAE national or an expat from a Visa Exempt Country planning a trip to the UK, this guide will help you understand what to expect and how to prepare before your travel ahead.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK rule introduces a new requirement for travellers from visa-free Countries to obtain an ETA before entering the UK. Effective from 25th February 2026, this digital pre-travel approval applies to most short-term visitors, including tourists and business travellers. The rule represents a new phase in strengthening immigration border security and screening for previously visa-exempt Countries, while also streamlining the UK’s entry process.
The initial phase of this scheme was rolled out in October 2023 and had been more lenient to allow visitors to adapt to the new change. After 25th February 2026, the approach will be much stricter as the UK intends on adopting a “no permission, no travel” policy. The ETA does not serve as a Visa, it is simply an “advance permission to travel” for the previously Visa-exempt Countries. Please note that having an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK
It is important to note that expats and citizens of the UAE who already hold a UK Visa for long term stay, including work Visas, Spouse Visas or student Visas do not need to apply for an ETA as their current Visa already permits their entry to the UK.
How does this affect me as a UAE citizen?
Previously, UAE nationals were part of Visa-exempt Countries and were only required to carry an Electronic Visa Waiver. With the new change, UAE national’s must now ensure that they apply for the UK ETA prior to their travel to avoid delays or being denied boarding. An approved ETA remains valid for up to two years, or until the respective passport expires. During its validity period, it enables repeated travel to the UK for short visits, with each stay limited to a maximum of six months.
However, this does not only apply to long Visa stays for tourism or business purposes. UAE national’s transiting through the UK on connecting flights will be subject to this requirement if they pass through UK passport control.
Does the UK ETA affect me as an expat?
Yes, all expats who are from the Visa exempt Countries and are residing in the UAE except British and Irish citizens, are required to obtain an ETA prior to travel unless they hold any long term Visa for the UK.
How long does the UK ETA approval take, and what is the cost?
Most applicants can expect a decision within a day of submitting their application, although in some cases, processing may take up to three days. The ETA application fee is AED 80 (approximately £16). For the application, you will require a valid passport, a recent passport photo, and your personal details. It is advisable to only make this transaction personally through the ETA App or official UK portal to avoid incorrect information being submitted through any third-party involvement.
